Vena Caval filters are used in patients with either a very high risk either for forming or being treates for deep vein clots. They are also used in patients that already have a deep vein clot, in order to prevent that clot from going to the lungs and lodging there.
These filters allow blood and small particles to pass, while preventing anything larger from passing through.
These filters now come in many different varieties, and the right one will be chosen by your surgeon for your particular issue.
The procedures is done as an outpatient or in the hospital, and typically only a small amount of local anesthesia is needed, as the procedure is mostly painless. The procedures is done using xray guidance to make sure everything is in the correct place prior to completion.
